Kota Bharu's Sultan Ismail Petra Airport |
KOTA BHARU: Kelantan is probably the only place in the world where its people regard the airport as a recreational attraction, said opposition leader Datuk Md Alwi Che Ahmad (BN-Kok Lanas).
Md Alwi said in Kelantan parents would bring their children to the airport just to watch airplanes land and take off.
“As a Kelantanese, I feel embarrassed and sad because the airport is the only big ‘park’ we have.
“All other main cities have central parks (but) we do not have one,” he said at the State Assembly yesterday. Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob responded by saying that the state government has the desire but not the capability to establish a central park.
“The desire is strong, but we do not have the capability yet. “When we are able to, we will certainly establish a central park, even if it is further away from the city.
“In the meantime, we have imposed conditions to allow for green spaces in new development areas, such as Tunjong,” he said.
State local government, housing and health committee chairman Dr Izani Husin said Kelantan has 40 recreational parks excluding those in housing estates.
“In the Kota Bharu Municipal Council alone, we have five large recreational parks.
“The local governments manage the parks, and the cost is high,” he said.
On Mohd Adhan Kechik’s (BN-Bukit Bunga) proposal to provide the necessary infrastructure to promote Lojing Highlands as an attractive tourism destination, state tourism committee chairman Md Anizam Ab Rahman said they should take heed of causes of recurring landslides in Cameron Highlands.
