Malaysian actor making it big in Taiwan

PETALING JAYA: Kelantan-born actor Lawrence Ong (pic) is the latest anak Malaysia to make his countrymen proud.

Ong has been cast in the play For Samuel Beckett 110, which will be running from April 28 to May 1 at a prominent theatre in Taiwan.

According to a press release by his agency, the play will be his first production at the Guling Street Avant-Garde Theatre in the Zhongzheng district of Taipei City.

Last year, Ong received a nomination for best actor in Taiwan’s 2015 MOD Short Film competition for the production titled W/C, where he was the only Malaysian among the 11 nominees. He also had a role in the English play Venus in Fur.

He was also the only Malaysian cast in Hong Kong director Edward Lam’s Dance Theatre productions such as Dreams of the Red Chamber in Hong Kong and I Hate Therefore I Marry in Beijing, as well as various other productions at Taiwan’s prestigious Greenray Theatre.

In an interview with Star2 last November, Ong said: “I’ve done mostly short films and independent films, but I think opportunities are growing for me.”

Born and bred in Kota Bharu, Ong studied communications in the United States and worked for the United Nations for some time before his passion for acting made him trade his desk job for an exciting foray into creative arts.

Fluent in both Chinese and English, Ong is one of a handful of South-East Asian actors active in the theatre and short film scene in Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China.
