FT mufti: Zakat-paying Musilims should be exempted from paying GST

PETALING JAYA: Federal Territories Mufti Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri said zakat-paying Muslims should be exempted from paying the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to avoid being taxed twice.

"There should be a mechanism so that Muslims who already pay zakat do not get taxed twice or it will burden them," he said in a statement posted on his Facebook page.

He also said the 6% GST rate should be reduced according to the people's needs. "The Government should also exempt the poor from being burdened with tax. The mechanism set up to collect the tax and distribute the proceeds needs to also be free from any oppressive elements," he said.

Dr Zuklifli said that GST implementation should be transparent, honest and full of integrity as the people are anxiously waiting for improvements in the quality of public transportation, education and other matters of public interest.

"A detailed explanation on GST needs to be disseminated to the people amid confusion and questions on its implementation," he added.

Zakat, an Islamic obligatory act, is a tithe that Muslims must pay monthly or annually to help the poor in their community.

The zakat rate in the Federal Territories stands at 2.5% of the total income, and is tax-deductible.
