KOTA BHARU: Kelantan will host the 21st Asean Economic Minister's Retreat at the end of the month to discuss crucial matters on the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
The meeting, from Feb 28 to Mar 1, is one of several held in conjunction with Malaysia's chairmanship of ASEAN 2015. It will be chaired by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamad (pic).
Mustapa said the meeting will enable ASEAN economic ministers to assess and take stock of overall achievements in regional integration and discuss new initiatives.
"This Retreat is critical in that the economic ministers will focus on ensuring that all core economic integration measures as stipulated in the AEC blueprint substantially are realised.
"This AEC is set to come into effect on Dec 31 this year and is aimed at creating a single market and production base in the region to further bolster ASEAN's progress and prosperity," he told reporters here.
Mustapa said the ministers are also expected to provide guidance on the draft of the Post-2015 Economic Vision and Plan for ASEAN.
He said the suggestion by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on a single ASEAN time zone will also be discussed at the meeting.
Mustapa said the meeting would be held in cooperation with the Kelantan Government.
He said the ministers and their entourage will visit that ICQS complex in Rantau Panjang and be briefed on the importance of the three border checkpoints in Bukit Bunga, Jeli and Pengkalan Kubor, Tumpat, as a gateway for trade ties between Malaysia and Thailand.
