Malindo told to explain delay in settling RM70 million airport tax arrears

KUALA LUMPUR: Malindo Air has been urged to explain why it has yet to pay airport tax arrears amounting to RM70 million.

In a press conference today, Umno Youth assistant secretary Datuk Mohamad Sahfri Ab Aziz said the movement was concerned as it involves national interest.

He said the passenger service charge (PSC) collected by Malindo is meant for Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).

"Malindo has no right to keep the money beyond the timeframe given," he said.

He said the owner of the airline, Indonesian Rusdi Kirana, should come forward and explain why the amount has yet to be settled.

Sahfri is also urging the airline to clarify on the stakes owned by Rusdi and Malindo’s chief executive officer Chandran Rama Muthy.

He questioned if it was true that Rusdi controls a 95 per cent equity in Malindo.

Sahfri said Umno Youth is also demanding a clarification on whether it was true that Chandran and his wife now hold 46 per cent of the shares in the airline.

On Sunday, Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi had urged MAHB to clarify if Malindo Air had paid its airport tax this year amounting to RM70 million and on why the airline is being given ‘special treatment’.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai yesterday acknowledged that Malindo owed the sum and expressed confidence the airline will be able to settle the arrears.
