In a press conference here today, the social activist said no action had been taken so far by the Transport Ministry, the police or the Malaysian-Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) on the low cost airline since the debt was revealed last Monday.
He claimed there was “an unmistakable smell of a rat somewhere” in the whole conundrum.
“There is every reason to believe that there is more to this case that meets the eye. The money which represents airport tax collected by Malindo Air on behalf of MAHB (Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd) belongs to MAHB and must be paid in when due to the rightful legal owner.
“In this case, Malindo Air has clearly committed criminal breach of trust, a serious offence in law.”
Authorities, especially the police and MACC, he said, should take special interest in this affair, given the ‘special treatment’ Malindo Air had been enjoying.
Tunku Aziz also highlighted several issues surrounding the airline, including the appointment of Indonesia’s new ambassador to Malaysia Rudsi Kirana as owner, the airline being allowed to operate at Kuala Lumpur International Airport instead of KLIA 2 and the possibility of bringing national carrier Malaysia Airlines down.
“One cannot help but wonder whether MAHB is trying to undo the progress the new management of Malaysia Airlines has worked their guts out to achieve under the already difficult circumstances.”
On 30 July, Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi urged MAHB to clarify if Malindo Air had paid its airport tax this year amounting to RM70 million and on why the airline was given ‘special treatment’.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai two days later acknowledged that Malindo owed the sum and expressed confidence the airline will be able to settle the arrears.
