BENTONG: The East Coast Rail Line (ECRL), which will have several underground tunnels along its 620km track, will cut travel time between here and Gombak to 25 minutes, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
It now takes about 90 minutes to travel between the two towns by road. He said Bentong would be one of the stops along the ECRL which connects Tumpat and Kuantan to Kuala Lumpur.
“It will only take 25 minutes from Bentong to Gombak,” he said after a Chinese New Year celebration at Kampung Baru Karak yesterday.
With the ECRL and Central Spine Road passing through Bentong, the town was set to become a satellite city for Greater Kuala Lumpur, he said.
“It’s important that people can stay in Bentong and work in Kuala Lumpur,” said Liow, who is MP for Bentong.
“We’re in discussions with the local people on the site; we should be able to finalise it by March.”
He added that there would be underground tunnels along the line, the longest would be 16km, stretching from Lentang to Gombak and cutting across Genting Hill.
Furthermore, Liow said, the Central Spine Road would allow Bentong residents to travel to Negeri Sembilan without passing through Kuala Lumpur.
The 350km-long Central Spine Road will be a toll-free highway connecting Bentong to Kota Bharu.
Liow announced a RM20,000 grant for the Kampung Baru Karak village committee to carry out cultural and community activities.
Also present at the event was Pahang MCA chairman and senator Datuk Hoh Khai Mun.
They handed out ang pow to about 800 senior citizens and children at the Karak new village.
Liow invited the crowd to attend the national Chinese New Year open house at Dataran Bentong tonight.
