KOTA BHARU: The management of University Sains
Malaysia (USM) has pledged to take action and monitor the issue of poor
hygiene at the campus cafeteria in Kubang Kerian.
USM senior deputy registrar Mohamad Abdullah said the university was aware of the situation and had spoken to stall operators over the matter.
“On the video of the rats uploaded by students on Facebook, we understand that this occurs at night. It so happens that the Desasiswa Nurani hostel is located near the rubbish bin of a dormitory and there are rats all over the place,” he said, adding that the rubbish bins did not belong to USM.
“As soon as we knew about it, the university contacted the cafeteria operators and took steps to resolve the problem,” he said.
Mohamad said the university management had met regularly and monitored the situation continuously. “The operators were called in and reprimanded because of previous
similar cases. The university will not tolerate and compromise on
cleanliness,” he said.
Mohamad said scheduled pest control operations have also been conducted regularly to tackle the problem.
He said the university also hoped that students and staff would cooperate to maintain cleanliness in the hostels, within the campus and surroundings to reduce the rat menace.
He said the university had set up a secretariat manned by both staff and students to address such matters. Mohamad said the hospital buildings’ rat problem has been solved and that the management was now trying resolve the infestation at the health campus cafeteria.
