KUALA LUMPUR: Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is to manage an iconic new 30-storey hotel of Islamic design with eco-friendly credentials in Kota Bharu, the state capital of Kelantan in the East Coast of Malaysia.
The five-star landmark Mövenpick Hotel Kota Bharu is Islamic in architectural design and décor symbolising Islam that is progressive, competitive and forward looking. Positioned as a world-class venue for international gatherings and events targeting high-yield travellers, the hotel is set to bring a new wave of development in the state.
Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts President & CEO, Jean Gabriel Pérès, signed the management agreement at a formal ceremony today with Ms. Masila Datuk Mohamed Ariff, CEO of Usahasama Seri Cemerlang Sdn Bhd, the land owner and developer of the project. Tengku Laksamana Kelantan Tengku Abdul Halim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim, graced the event and witnessed the signing of the agreement in support of the partnership.
The approximately 1.177 acres site is strategically and prestigiously located at Jalan Telipot at the heart of the city and fronting the Sultan of Kelantan’s current residence and palace. Furthermore, with the development with the development of the East Coast Expressway (LPT), constructed under the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) development project, it would improve connectivity of the site to commercial hubs within and outside Kelantan.
As for international travellers, the Sultan Ismail Petra Kota Bharu Airport, set to gain an international status and recognition. This is an important factor that is set to boost tourism from China, Taiwan, Brunei, Indo China, Japan, Korea, Australia, Singapore and the Middle East.
According to the master plan, the hotel will offer a total of 452 rooms, 114 Deluxe Rooms, 139 Junior Suites as well as 16 Royal Suites, three Empress Suites and one 815sqm Emperor Suite taking the top three floors of the completed hotel.
With a helipad on the roof, the luxury hotel will also feature a giant banquet hall seating up to a thousand guests, restaurant and café, stylish boutiques and retail outlets, His & Hers Pool, Spa & Gym, Club Lounge, Business Centre, and three floors of underground car parking. In addition, the certified ‘Green Building’ will feature the latest environmentally-friendly technology to save energy and reduce wastage, in line with the principles of Islam.
Scheduled to open in 2018, this latest announcement from Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts sees the continuation of an ambitious expansion plan for the upscale Swiss hotel group in South-East Asia.

Among seven hotels and resorts the group is opening over the next three years are two others in .gaya – Mövenpick Hotel Convention Centre Kuala Lumpur and Mövenpick Resort & Spa Kuala Terengganu. As well as Malaysia, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is also expanding in Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, the Philippines and Singapore.
