KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan government plans to introduce motorised trishaws (beca) to attract youths to enter the trade now operated by the senior citizens.
State ececutive councillor Datuk Maj (rtd) Mohd Anizam Abdul Rahman (Kemahang-PAS) said since Visit Kelantan Year 2016 would be launched next year, the government will find ways to attract youths to take over from the present 100 riders aged between 50 and 90.
"This is a dying trade and the younger generation is not interested to carry on the profession.
"The beca in Kelantan differs from those in Penang where the passenger sits in front while the Kelantan beca allows the passengers to sit beside the rider.
"This is more practical and allow the rider to interact with pasengers," Mohd Anizam told the state assembly sitting.
He was responding to an original question by Mat Razi Mat Ali (Pengkalan Kubor-BN) who asked of plans to look into the welfare of the beca riders in light of the Visit Kelantan Year 2016.
Mohd Azizam said the government was aware of the plight of the beca riders who lived in poverty.
"We have taken measures to refurbish all becas to reflect Visit Kelantan Year next year and at the moment the beca riders have been receiving money from the Welfare Department and we may think of another way of helping them financially," he said.
To a supplementary question by Roslan Puteh (Guchil-PKR), Mohd Anizam said the concept of a motorised beca may be tailored to the ones in Acheh.
The state government is targeting six million tourists next year. As at September, there were about three million domestic and international tourists.
