Rulers to choose next Yang di-Pertuan Agong

PETALING JAYA: The Conference of Rulers meeting which starts tomorrow will be a momentous one because the Malay Rulers will be selecting the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The new king , the 15th in the history of the Malaysian monarchy, will be known at the end of the three-day meeting on Friday.

It is understood that the next in line is 47-year-old Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan.

The Conference of Rulers will also bid farewell to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, 88, who made history as the only Sultan who has been king twice in his lifetime. Tuanku Abdul Halim is the Sultan of Kedah.

According to Malaysia’s unique system of monarchy, it is the procedure for the king to be elected to a five-year term by his brother Rulers.

The nine Rulers will decide whether the nominee in line is suitable for the post of Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

They comprise the Sultans of Kedah, Selangor, Pahang, Johor, Terengganu, Kelantan and Perak, as well as the Raja of Perlis and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan.

Voting will be done via a secret ballot handed out by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal during the special election meeting.

The Governors of Malacca, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak will not take part in the balloting although they are members of the Conference of Rulers.

A majority of five votes is required before the Ruler or chairman presiding over the Election Meeting offers the office of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to the nominee.

Once the decision has been accepted, the Conference of Rulers will confirm the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the next five years.

If the Conference of Rulers decides on Sultan Muhammad V, it will be the second time that Kelantan ascends the throne.

Sultan Muhammad V’s father Sultan Ismail Petra Ibni Almarhum Sultan Yahya Petra was king from 1975 to 1979.

Sultan Muhammad V was proclaimed Sultan of Kelantan in 2010, taking over from his father who is incapacitated by illness.
