GEORGE TOWN, 26 July: Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd, the operator of the Rapid bus
services in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kuantan, is awaiting the green
light from the government to launch its services in Kota Bharu. Chief executive officer Zohari Sulaiman also said no dates had been set
for the launch of the service in cities like Ipoh and Seremban since
government approval was needed.
"Rapid Kota Baru should take off as soon as approval is given to
proceed since all the infrastructure needed to launch the service has
been prepared," he said before a buka pause event at the Rapid Penang
office. Present was Rapid Penang chief operating officer Mohd Shukri Abdul Rahman.
Zohari said of the 200 new stage buses for Rapid Penang (80 of which
will be plying the roads of George Town and Seberang Prai by the end of
this year), 40 units would be double-deckers.
"By the end of 2014, Rapid Penang will boast a fleet of 400 buses," he
said, adding that there were currently no plans to expand electric buses
to cities outside the Klang Valley.
The country's first electric bus for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network will ply the Sunway elevated BRT line. Construction of the 7.5km elevated line of six stations will commence
next year and the BRT service is expected to start by 2016. "Rapid Penang's solutions to reduce the traffic congestion on the
streets of George Town is to provide more buses," said Zohari.
The traffic ills plaguing George Town will see a new traffic flow
introduced this Saturday with a one-way traffic system where there is
high traffic volume. Areas affected include Jalan Burma, Jalan Kelawai,
Jalan Bagan Jermal, Jalan Pangkor and Gurney Drive. Rapid Penang had announced that its bus captains had been briefed on the new traffic flow.
