RANTAU PANJANG: Villagers living along  Sungai Golok have  praised the Federal Government for continuing with a project to maintain the stability of the river banks here covering a stretch of more than 10km.

They said that the project, estimated to cost more than RM100 million, was important to prevent further erosion along the banks. Coffee shop owner Abdullah Samad said villagers were happy to see that the project was nearing completion.

"Before this, many people, especially those living close to the river, feared for their homes being flooded and destroyed by erosion. "However, when the blocks of stones were put up, they were relieved and expressed their gratefulness to the Federal Government."

Businessman Abdul Wajid said the project would prevent further erosion as well as stop the river from overflowing its banks and flooding the low-lying areas, especially during the monsoon season. "Residents now feel safe with the construction of the embankments."

Kelantan National Security Council secretary Mohd Rosli Mamat said the project, which started a few years ago, was approved by the Federal Government under the 6th Malaysia Plan. "The project has been going on over the years. "It's between 70 per cent and 80 per cent complete.

"It covers 13 areas between Pengkalan Kubor, Tumpat, and Kampung Jenob in Bukit Bunga, Jeli." The project was aimed at maintaining the stability of the river banks, especially those areas which had been identified as facing severe erosion.

He advised people living in low-lying areas in Kelantan to make early preparations to face the floods in view of the monsoon season. He said this included safeguarding their valuables and important documents so that they were not misplaced in a chaotic situation when they were ordered to evacuate their houses.
