SEPANG: The Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V, has arrived in Kuala Lumpur to take his oath as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The Sultan, who boarded an Airbus A319 at the Sultan Ismail Petra airport in Pengkalan Chepa earlier, arrived at the Bunga Raya Complex here at 10.10am.
Selangor Raja Muda Tengku Amir Shah and members of the Selangor royal family were present to welcome the Sultan. He was greeted with cheers by hundreds of Malaysians representing government agencies and registered uniformed bodies, which had waited at the VVIP complex from as early as 7.30am.
The Sultan was also greeted by Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak, who is also the ceremony's Special Committee chairman, and his wife, Datin Seri Raya Erom.
Sultan Muhammad V later left for Parliament Square for an official ceremony in the official car for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, accompanied by the royal motorcade.
At Parliament Square, the Sultan will inspect a guard of honour before receiving a 21-gun salute. His five-year term begins today, alongside Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, who was elected as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the same period.
Both Their Majesties, appointed to their respective posts for the next five years, were chosen by the Malay rulers at the 243rd Meeting (Special) of the Conference of Rulers held in Oct.
Sultan Muhammad V, 47, will be installed as the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong later today at the Istana Negara here, in a ceremony steeped in Malay royal customs and tradition.
The installation ceremony, which will be attended by eminent guests, will take place at the Balairong Seri or Throne Hall of the Istana Negara, with the Sultan taking his Oath of Installation.
He will also sign the Letter of Proclamation, marking the formal commencement of his tenure as the Supreme Head of the Federation. His installation comes a day after the Sultan of Kedah, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, completed his five-year reign as the 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
