KOTA BHARU: The Sungai Kelantan integrated flood alleviation project through the construction of the dams in Sungai Nenggiri and Sungai Lebir under the 11th Malaysia Plan (RMK11) is capable of overcoming the flood problems in the state.
The State Exco for Local Government, Housing, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Fattah Mahmood said the state government believed the project would give much benefit to the people in the state.
"We (the state government) have requested for the project a long time ago and we are thankful to the federal government for including it in the RMK11.
"We are convinced that the construction of the flood alleviation project could prevent major floods," he said when contacted by Bernama, here today.
Abdul Fattah said the announcement by the Federal Government on the construction of the flood alleviation project was described as a timely and wise choice for the benefit of the people in the state.
"Of course, the flood is determined by the force of Allah SWT but we can endeavour to prevent it and this is a smart way to reduce the effects of the flood on the people," he said.
Prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, when tabling the RMK11 at the Dewan Rakyat today, also announced several development projects for the state of Kelantan for implementation under the RMK11.
Besides the flood alleviation projct, the prime minister also announced the construction of the Kota Bharu - Kuala Krai Expressway and the extension of the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport.
During the extraordinary floods which occurred in December last year, it was estimated that 300,000 people throughout the state became victims and more than 1,800 houses were destroyed.
