PETALING JAYA: The closure of the 321km Gemas - Gua Musang railway
track has been postponed to Aug 15 this year, a month after the
Aidilfitri holidays.
Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid
Albar said Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) was allowed to operate
the track after it appealed for a postponement.
"On Jun 25, KTMB appealed to SPAD to postpone the closure of train
services at the sector until Aug 15 2014," he said in a statement
Thursday.
Syed Hamid said SPAD agreed to KTMB's request on condition that it
made sure that its services on the track -previously reported to have
suffered operational damages- were safe.
Other conditions included having more track monitoring and
maintenance, readying staff for critical events, imposing slower speed
limits if necessary, preparing higher quality train car stocks and even a
special monitoring committee.
He said KTMB agreed to these conditions and would accept full responsibility over its operations on the stretch.
"SPAD will taking closing actions (on the track) if any incidents occur during the postponement period," Syed Hamid added.
The track was originally supposed to have been closed down for repairs on June 27. Previously, the Railwaymen's Union of Malaya said closing the stretch
would strand hundreds of thousands of passengers, put 300 KTMB staff at
risk and cost the company RM100,000 in revenue a day.
